A brief on CENTRAL PULP & PAPER RESEARCH INSTITUTE (CPPRI) SAHARANPUR (U.P.) - Set up in November 1980 as a nodal centre for carrying out research in the field of pulp and paper and helping the Indian paper industry to overcome its R&D needs.

The Central Pulp & Paper Research Institute (CPPRI) Saharanpur is a registered body under the Societies Registration Act., 1860 with its headquarters at Saharanpur (U.P.). The Institute was set up in November 1980 as a nodal centre for carrying out research in the field of pulp and paper and helping the Indian paper industry to overcome its R&D needs.

The management of the institute vests with the Council of Association, which includes representatives of the Paper Industry, Government, Scientific and Research Institutions. Planning and monitoring of research and developmental programs are undertaken by the Research Advisory Committee of the Institute. The Institute focuses on R&D activities while addressing the key issues relating to Indian paper industry such as raw material and process research, energy & environmental management, quality improvement, water conservation and information dissemination through the financial support from the Plan and Non-Plan funded schemes.

1.0 ACTIVITIES & NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS

Institute in its endeavor is making concerted efforts to address the major issues such as raw material, quality improvement, energy conservation, environmental management and human resource development through various research schemes for enhancing the performance of the industry. XI Plan schemes cover eight activities under three broad research areas v.i.z. raw material & product development; energy conservation & environmental management and infrastructure & developmental activities.

1.1 Know-how was developed for production of Dietary Fibre from indigenous raw material and process conditions were optmised for producing food grade pulp from indigenous raw material

1.2 Enzymatic deinking technology was developed by the institute as an alternate to conventional technology for mixed office waste (MOW).

1.3 Coir Pith, a waste from coir industry was successfully utilized for production of value added lignin & lignin chemicals.

1.4 Assisting Central Pollution Control Board (C.P.C.B.), Petroleum Cornvation Association (P.C.R.A.) Bureau of Energy in formulation of waste water discharge standards & National Energy Norms /Standards respectively.

1.5 Providing technical services/ consultancy in the following areas

  • Determination & quantification of N.C.G..
  • Rapid Environment Impact Assessment
  • Consultancy regarding trouble shooting of Effluent Treatment Plant E.T.P.) ; Prefeasibility of Lignin Separation System (LSS) performance evaluation of E.T..P& L.S.S.
  • Calibration certification of Flow meters Certification of Water Consumption

1.6 Institute was awarded one project on enzyme bleaching by Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India.

1.7 Scientists were invited as Technical experts by following important Govt. departments for finalizing of paper quality and purchase orders involving huge capital

  • Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS).
  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
  • Govt. Stationary Department of various states.
  • Printing and Stationery Department of various states
  • Central Excise Customs, Revenue Intelligence etc.

1.8 Only Institute in India providing comparative calibration check service of paper testing instruments in paper mills.

1.9 Training activities at CPPRI are gradually gaining momentum and becoming a platform for students fraternity for specialized training in the area of biotechnology, Forestry & Environment Management Students from Overseas universities are also outsourcing our facilities for practical training.

1.10 Hindi  Rashtra  Bhasha Pakhwara was observed at CPPRI from September 01-14-2007 to motivate the staff to promote the use of Hindi Rashtra Bhasha not only in day today work but also in Scientific & Technical work. The Institute is taking adequate steps to promote the use of Hindi. Efforts are being made to translate the scientific articles and course manuals in Hindi for their wide use by technical personnel of paper mills located in Hindi speaking regions of the country.

2.0 UPGRADATION OF R&D FACILITIES

Institute further strengthened its infrastructure facilities in the area of environment & papermaking by acquiring state-of-art equipment such as Hazardous Waste Filtration System, Laboratory Coater and Power Analyser

3.0 INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

CPPRI continued its efforts in enhancing the International recognition for its capabilities and world class infrastructure facilities leading to outsourcing of its expertise by neighboring nations Institute is also making concerted efforts to work in close co-operation with STFI, Sweden, Finnish Pulp & Paper, Finland and Australian Pulp & Paper industry on projects of mutual interest. CPPRI signed an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with STFI Packforsk AB, STFI, Sweden on September 06, 2007 to facilitate capacity building and taking up joint R&D projects in frontier areas of paper technology, technology transfer and exchange of scientists.

4.0 AUSTERITY MEASURES

Measures to reduce the consumption of petrol, diesel and electricity were adopted by the Institute as a part of austerity drive. Expenditure on transportation, local conveyance, O.T.A. and travel was also reduced.
