INTRODUCTION:

Workmanship plays an important role in efficiency and productivity of a person in a job. It also helps in building the image of the individual and the organization in which he is working. Workmanship is related to the outcome of the skills acquired and learned by the worker. It is also the reflection of one's attitude towards his or her work. Workmanship is reflected in the quality of the total work done. A small portion of job done with poor workmanship may mar and affect the quality of the entire work.

WORKMANSHIP:

* The application of knowledge, skills, artistry and proficiency, with which one performs his job, is called workmanship. Workmanship is observed by the result end product of the performance of one's assigned job. The attitude or behavior and mood of the person may influence the process. But generally speaking workmanship is more related to acquire skills and practice and experience;

* In an organization various person with varied knowledge and skills are required at different levels of the hierarchy to perform different types of jobs. They require various types of skills to be applied for better workmanship;

There are few basic skills needed for a good workman which can be classified as below:

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

The ability to speak, listen, understand and to provide answers in easy to understand language is called communication skills. Attitude and behavioral training helps if refining their ability to be good communicator. This skill is very important skill for everybody and one must strive to learn effective communications skills at all ages. The skill is specially required by the persons handling the Receptions desk, telephone operators, Public Relations Officers etc., and also by outdoor staff.

SKILLS IN HANDLING MACHINES:

Ability to handle different kinds of basic hand tools such as screw drivers, spanners, pliers, saws, drills, hammers, solders, cutters, knives, wire strippers etc., helped the workman to perform his duties in a better way. A good workman should acquire all the above skills in order to become a good workman. The use of these may be done as per their operating instructions and experience.

QUALITY:

The image of service organization or manufacturing concerns depends not only on the quantum of volume of the products or service rendered to the public, but very much also on the quality of services rendered by its employees and quality in goods. Quality workmanship can be achieved by the following:

* Planning for proper tools, layouts of the equipments and material;

* Use of proper techniques;

* Use of proper material;

* Use of proper tools;

* Finishing of the work.

ADVANTAGES & BENEFITS OF QUALITY WORKMANSHIP:

Why job involves certain skills, knowledge and attitude? Inculcate those requirements in you for your own benefit. If you have mastered your job you will have many advantages:

* Your capacity of doing work increases many folds since you are able to do work much faster than other;

* You avoid delay to the customers thereby satisfying their expectations;

* If you know your job well you will have lot of confidence in doing your work;

* Your image with superiors, colleagues, subordinates and public gets enhanced as a good worker, quality worker;

* Objectives of the organization will be achieved easily which enhances the chances of your personal progress;

* Your value in the organization will increase, which will be appreciated ultimately by your employers by some kind of monitory rewards in some form or other;

* Your job satisfaction will improve and you will feel yourself important;

* Your personal life will improve and you will get better happiness.

POOR WORKMANSHIP:

If the output and quality of work looks unfinished, insufficient and shabby, it may be due to poor workmanship. The poor workmanship leads to fault poor equipments and unsatisfactory service/goods for the user. This leads to large number of complaints. Poor workmanship may be attributed to many reasons.

REASONS FOR POOR WORKMANSHIP:

Reasons for poor workmanship are generally as below:

* Lack of knowledge of the equipment or work;

* Inadequate skills and practice of the person for the given work;

* Lack or inadequate availability of appropriate tools and machines;

* Poor quality of materials of the equipments and wires and other accessories such as solders, insulation, joining material, tools etc.,;

* Lack of supervision and monitoring and accountability of work;

* Lack of motivation to work better;

* Lack of willingness/aptitude in the worker to perform better.

HOW TO AVOID POOR WORKMANSHIP:

* Try to do the job right at the very first time, don't leave any thing badly done or complete;

* Learn and practice for doing excellent job;

* Acquire better skills;

* Arrange/obtain all the necessary tools, machines, material and information before hand;

* Use your common sense and presence of mind to find out solutions for different situations;

* Always test and take measurements of electrical characteristics;

* Take proper measurement of rooms, furniture or equipment prior to carrying out the work;

* Do the work with a team spirit with other co-workers;

* Arrange to take joint/combined tests in time with team efforts;

* Take proper acknowledgement of completion of work from the end user;

* Convey the work completion report to the authority;

* Never hurry and take short cuts;

* Have pride in your job.
