Railway freight Service tax on railway freight kept in abeyance Letter F.No. 356/24/2009-TRU Dated 1-9-2009 Government of India Ministry of Finance (Department of Revenue) Central Board of Excise Customs, New Delhi Subject : Service tax on railway freight - Regarding It may be recalled that in this year's budget, service tax was imposed on railway freight through entry in the Finance (No. 2) Bill, 2009 . After enactment of Finance (No. 2) Act, 2009 the levy was notified to come into effect from 1-9-2009 vide notification No. 25/2009-S.T., dated 19-8-2009 . 2. This is to inform you that levy of service tax on railway freight has been kept in abeyance through issuance of notification No. 33/2009-S.T. and 34/2009-S.T. , both dated 1-9-2009. A copy each of these notifications is enclosed.
