Central Government Amends Excise Duty Exemptions for Specific Brass Bars and Rods Under SSI and Modvat Schemes

The Central Government, under the authority of the Central Excise Act, 1944, has issued Notification No. 18/98-CE dated 18th July 1998, amending previous notifications to exempt certain cast brass bars and rods from excise duties under the SSI Exemption and Modvat schemes. Specifically, the amendments apply to items under heading/sub-heading Nos. 74.03, excluding cast brass bars/rods not exceeding 3 feet in length and brass billets weighing up to 5 kilograms, as detailed in sub-heading No. 7403.21. These changes are made in the interest of public policy.
