Supreme Court affirms Election Commission's authority for Special Intensive Revision under Section 21(3) of Representation of Peoples Act
The Supreme Court upheld the Election Commission's authority to conduct a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, rejecting petitions challenging its legal basis. The Court emphasized that electoral rolls must be dynamic to remove names of deceased or migrated voters and found the expansion of acceptable identity documents from seven to eleven as inclusive rather than exclusionary. The Court referenced Section 21(3) of the Representation of the Peoples Act and Article 324 of the Constitution, affirming the EC's residual power to revise rolls "in such manner as it may think fit." Challenges by opposition parties and an NGO alleging lack of legal basis and procedural issues, including removal of search features from draft rolls, were dismissed. The Court recognized the EC's discretion in balancing constitutional rights and powers in managing electoral roll revisions.

Inflation data showed retail inflation at an eight-year low, supporting the currency's strength. However, uncertainties related to trade tariffs and foreign institutional investor outflows limited further gains. The central bank is tasked with maintaining inflation within a specified target range. Equity markets showed positive momentum despite significant foreign investor sell-offs. Market analysts noted that expectations of a US interest rate cut and favorable domestic economic indicators contributed to the currency's appreciation, though geopolitical events and trade tensions remain potential risks.

Supreme Court Upholds Election Commission's Power for Special Intensive Revision Under Section 21(3) of RP Act
The Supreme Court upheld the Election Commission's authority to conduct a special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, rejecting claims that the exercise lacked legal basis. The court emphasized that electoral rolls cannot remain static and must be revised to remove names of deceased or migrated voters. It cited Section 21(3) of the Representation of the Peoples Act, granting the Election Commission discretion to direct special revisions as deemed necessary. The court recognized the Commission's residual constitutional power under Article 324 and noted that the addition of the term "intensive" did not alter the legal framework. Challenges raised about exclusionary practices, including non-acceptance of Aadhaar and removal of online search features, were addressed, with the court observing that increased document requirements could be inclusionary. The court affirmed the Commission's role in managing electoral roll inclusions and exclusions and allowed the revision process to continue.
