Government have reduced excise duty in respect of the various parts/accessories of refrigeration and air-conditioning appliances for use in the installation of cold storage plants from 40% to 15% ad valorem, vide notification No. 45/88-C.E. Requests for extending this exemption to refrigeration equipment and parts used for milk handling, meat processing, fish processing, ice making and transportation of all types of marine products have been received. 2. The Board is of the view that close monitoring of the existing exemption is required for the purpose of providing adequate safeguards against misuse of such exemption. 3. It is, therefore, requested to keep close vigil on the working of the existing exemption. A quarterly report may be sent giving the number of units availing the concession and the value of clearances made under concessional rate. Any misuse of this scheme should be immediately brought to the notice of the Board. Suggestion regarding providing adequate safeguards against any misuse or possible misuse of such exemption would be welcomed.
