Historical Perspective: Customs

The provisions requiring mandatory payment of Central Excise Duty/Customs Duty/Service Tax has covered a significant journey since introduction in 2006/2007. The following details will help us in understanding this journey.

Since introduction of e-payment of custom duty in 2007, it was voluntary, not mandatory. After amendment of section 47 of the Customs Act, 1962 (vide Finance Act, 2012) and issuance of notification No. 83/2012-Customs (NT), dated 17.09.2012, it has been made mandatory for specified classes of importers for the first time with effect from 17/09/2012.
