NMCC Condoles Passing away of V.Govindarajan

The National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC), Government of India, has condoled the passing away of Shri V.Govindarajan, former Member-Secretary of NMCC and distinguished civil servant.

Shri Govindarajan (IAS retd: Andhra Pradesh cadre, 1967), died after a brief illness on Sunday 25 December 2011.

In a condolence message, NMCC said:

“Shri Govindarajan will be remembered for his vast knowledge and experience of the industrial and financial sectors, and his immense contribution to the formulation and implementation of strategies for the growth of the country’s manufacturing sector. As Member Secretary, he steered the NMCC with distinction in its formative years. The Council benefited greatly from his deep understanding of issues relating to industrial policy, which helped us in our endeavours to frame recommendations to the government for improving the competitive edge of India’s manufacturing sector, as reflected in the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Programme with special focus on making the small and medium enterprises more competitive, and the national strategy for manufacturing. In his death, we mourn the passing away of a valued colleague, and a void that will be difficult to fill”.

In a career spanning many decades, Shri Govindarajan served in many different capacities, including as Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion(DIPP); Secretary, Department of Company Affairs; Chairman, Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB); Additional Secretary dealing with multilateral development finance institutions such as the World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF); Asian Development Bank etc; and as a Permanent Invitee to the Prime Minister’s Trade and Economic Reforms Committee (TERC). He also severed as the Office of India’s Executive Director in IMF in Washington.
