Amendment The word amendment implies such- An addition or change within the lines of the original instrument as will effect an improvement or better carry out the purpose for which it was framed and it cannot be so construed as to enable the Parliament to destroy the permanent character of the Constitution. According to the Random House Dictionary of the English Language (Unabridged Edn.) amendment means to alter, modify, rephrase or add to, substract from (a motion, bill, Constitution etc.) by formal procedure, to change for the better, improve, to remove or correct faults. According to Crawford (Statutory Construction (1940 Edn.) page 170) there are many different definitions of the term amendment, as it applies to legislation. Generally, it may be defined as an alteration or change of something, proposed in a bill or established as law .
