According to Black s Law Dictionary 6th Edition the relevant passage occurs: The existing state of things at any given date. Status quo ante bellum the state of things before the law . status quo to be preserved by a preliminary injunction is the last actual, peaceable, uncontested status which preceded the pending controversy. In Bharat Coking Coal Ltd. v. State of Bihar , 1988 CriLJ 396 , stated thus: According to the ordinary legal connotation, the term status quo implies the existing state of things at any given point of time. By passing the order of status quo , the civil court only gives direction to parties in terms of the order passed by said court, without giving any finding on any of the issues in respect of which order of status - quo was passed and legal commutation of the word status quo , it implies existence state of things at the said given point of time.............
