NMCC to Expand Visionary Leaders for Manufacturing (VLFM) Programme

The National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) was set up in October, 2004 under the Chairmanship of Dr. V. Krishnamurthy to promote manufacturing in India and to make it globally competitive.  Dr. Krishnamurthy while interacting to the press informed that the VLFM programme have been very successful in Pune region and in the next phase it will be taken to Chennai.

The NMCC has been highlighting the importance of creating capable leaders for the needed breakthrough in Indian Manufacturing.

Accordingly, a unique programme- Visionary Leaders for Manufacturing (VLFM) Programme was developed and has been implemented since 2007 under the aegis of the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council by CII, IIM Kolkata, IIT Kanpur & IIT Madras under Indo-Japan technical cooperation programme of JICA.  Prof.  Shoji Shiba is the Chief Advisor and Mentor for this Programme.

The Visionary Leaders for Manufacturing Programme is a set of four programmes, which covers the whole spectrum.

 The 4 Programmes are for:

a.     CEOs(executed by VLFM institute of CII)

b.    Senior Managers(being executed by IIM-C, IIT-K & IIT-M jointly)

c.     Middle Level Managers(executed by VLFM institute of CII)

d.     Visionary SMEs for Tier 1 and Tier 2 companies (executed by VLFM institute of CII).

The major outcomes have been:

·         A new innovative one year Joint Programme of IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur & IIM Calcutta for Post Graduate Diploma for Executives for Visionary Leadership in Manufacturing (PGPEX-VLM)

·       More than 200 success stories involving more than 100 companies.  While 80% of these relate to the cost savings of the order of more than 1 crore per company, the balance relate to innovations which include product development, new business processes etc.  Two notable examples are Chotukool and Submersible Pumps.  The emphasize has been to nurture attitudes and approaches to work which foster innovation

·      More than 500 plus visionary leaders developed so far.

Prof. Shoji Shiba is being honored with the Padma Shri this year for his outstanding services to the development of India as a premier manufacturing country.
